After all the changes to our streets in recent years, a group of us, all local residents, are calling on Newcastle City Council to make our streets safer and quieter. Our neighbourhood is the only one in this area which is open to through traffic (especially from the Coast Road to the City Centre).
This map shows that our neighbourhood takes lots of through traffic,
unlike surrounding neighbourhoods (shaded in blue)
The 2022-2024 trial of a low-traffic solution created new opportunities for residents to walk, meet their neighbours, and spend time outdoors safely - but the design of the scheme led to unsafe driving through back-lanes.
At a council meeting on 12th June, council leader Nick Kemp said that he wanted to collaborate with residents to design a new scheme. Therefore, we are rallying around the Council’s own proposed Option 2, which was the most popular option from a consultation the council held in St Cuthbert’s Church on Heaton Road in February 2024.
We have submitted a petition to the council with over 180 local residents signatures and are awaiting a response to our proposals from them.
Option 2 makes a pedestrian-friendly high street on Heaton Park Road, and prevents through-traffic in back-lanes.
Instead of the current Heaton Park Road we can create an amazing neighbourhood
